Radiator Installation & System Balancing in Glasgow

A radiator that's cold at the top, a room that never quite heats up, or a heating system that feels inconsistent from room to room is usually a sizing or balancing problem rather than a boiler fault. BeSafe 24-7 fits new radiators and relocations, and balances existing systems so every room heats evenly and efficiently.

What we cover

  • New radiator installation, sized correctly for the room
  • Radiator relocation or replacement during a renovation
  • Valve selection — TRVs, lockshield and manual valves
  • Full system balancing across every radiator
  • Bleeding and pressure checks
  • Diagnosing radiators that are cold at the top or bottom

Why balancing matters

An unbalanced system forces your boiler to work harder to heat rooms that should warm up quickly, wasting energy and money. Balancing adjusts the flow to each radiator so heat is distributed evenly across the whole property — often making a noticeable difference to comfort and running costs.

Why choose BeSafe 24-7

FAQs

Radiators & Balancing — Frequently Asked Questions

What Glasgow customers most often ask about radiators & balancing.

Why is one radiator cold when the others are hot?
Usually a balancing problem — water takes the path of least resistance and starves the furthest radiator. It can also be a stuck thermostatic valve or sludge. Balancing adjusts flow to each radiator so heat spreads evenly.
What does balancing a heating system involve?
Adjusting the lockshield valve on each radiator so flow is distributed correctly across the whole system, measuring the temperature difference between flow and return at each one. It's methodical rather than quick, but it makes a real difference to comfort and running cost.
My radiator is cold at the bottom but hot at the top — why?
That's sludge and corrosion debris settling in the bottom of the radiator, not trapped air. Bleeding won't help. It usually calls for a power flush or, if the radiator is badly affected, replacement.
Should I bleed my radiators myself?
Bleeding to release trapped air is a reasonable DIY job — turn the heating off, use a bleed key, catch drips with a cloth. Check the boiler pressure afterwards, as bleeding lowers it and you may need to top up.
Can you move a radiator to another wall?
Yes. Relocations are common during kitchen and bathroom renovations. We'll advise whether the new position works for heat distribution — under a window is traditional for good reason, though modern insulation makes it less critical.
How do I know what size radiator a room needs?
It's calculated from room dimensions, window area, insulation and external walls, not guessed from what fits the space. An undersized radiator never quite heats the room; an oversized one wastes energy. We calculate it properly.
Are thermostatic radiator valves worth fitting?
Generally yes. TRVs let you set different temperatures per room, so you're not heating spare bedrooms to the same level as the living room. They pay for themselves reasonably quickly in a house with rooms used at different times.
How long does fitting a radiator take?
A straight replacement in an existing position is usually under two hours. A new radiator requiring fresh pipework, or a relocation, takes longer depending on access to run the pipes.
Do I need to drain the whole system?
Not always. We can often isolate the radiator being worked on, which is quicker and avoids losing all your inhibitor. A full drain-down is sometimes unavoidable for pipework changes, and we'd re-dose the inhibitor afterwards.
What is an inhibitor and do I need it?
A chemical added to the system water that slows corrosion and limescale build-up. It genuinely extends system life and protects the boiler. Levels deplete over time, particularly after any drain-down, so it's worth checking during a service.
